Take the test, pick up a good quality Small hand held HAM radio, and start chatting away.

I spent my career as an Electronics Technician.

After retiring, I studied, got my license, then bought some radios.

Now I find there is no one I want to talk to and I have no desire to tinker with the gear.

But now I have an emergency communications system, just in case.

These radios cover not only the amateur bands (VHF/UHF) but also Police, Fire, Rescue, FM broadcast, etc.

I have a Baofeng as well, but its the 8 watt instead of the 5 watt.

Actually works good. I bought it before I got my license just to listen. I hit the repeaters with it no problem. Very easy to program using CHIRP software.
I'll get a base station one of these days.

I have the same radio. What is the programming software you mentioned? I've only messed with it a little and really don't know how to use it. I bought it to be able to listen.

You need a programming cable https://www.amazon.com/PC03-Genuine-Prog...28fc912636d06a5

here is the software https://chirp.danplanet.com/projects/chirp/wiki/Home

make programming very easy. You will need to be able to program it to pick up and use the repeaters.
and easily change the settings on the radio

here are the repeaters https://www.repeaterbook.com/repeaters/index.php?state_id=51

if you have any questions let me know

We were in Charles City yesterday visiting family. I took the Baofeng f8hp with us. That evening I was scanning my programmed channels and there was a check-in on the Bonair repeater. My son actually got through to them. I thought that was impressive. Thats quite a distance for a handheld.

I just got a Baofeng today. No license yet, but there's a test in Virginia Beach August 2. A lot of this is stuff I knew 20 years ago, it's coming back as I read the study guide.
I'm also looking for a mobile unit to mount in my truck. The main reason I got into this was for the fire department, but why not take it a little more?

Yes - one day class put on by the Old Virginia Hams in Woodbridge VA. Cost of class - free!

Baofeng radios are great - so are Woxun(sp?).

Are you thinking to start a VAGunTrader net? Most of the ham radio guys are also supporters of the 2nd Amendment and believe in "preparedness."
