I recently discovered, after shooting my wasr at night, that there is a considerable amount of flash that comes out of the vent holes in the gas tube. I have an adjustable gas piston from kns precision installed. Is this common for an ak type rifle? Is it somehow caused by the piston? I don't think it's a problem really I'm just curious.

Yes, totally normal. Just excess gas blowing off that is not needed to push the piston. The "Chinese" style vent holes in the gas tube will put in quite a show in low light.

Follow up question. How much noise would that excess gas make if you tried to suppress the gun?
