I don't know anything about squirrels in your area but I imagine they are not any different than SW Virginia squirrels.

I retired 10 years ago and moved back to Virginia. I own mountain land in Franklin County (cabin) and Wythe County (home).
There are abundant Gray squirrels in both counties with Fox squirrels very common in Wythe County.

Squirrel populations have ranged from poor (2 years out of 10) to outstanding 4 years out of 10).

Those 2 bad years of hunting the nut crop failed in my areas and the squirrels deserted the forests for the fence rows between fields. Squirrels gotta eat.

With virtually 0 knowledge of your area I would advise you to drive west. There is plenty of National Forest available if you are willing to spend a night or two.

If you get out this way -- I would be happy to stalk a few squizzies with you.

Are you a shotgun hunter or a 22 hunter?
Where have you squirrel hunted before?

I use a .22 for the most part unless it's deer season on busy public areas or I am going to a new spot I don't know. Theres a WMA about an hour from me that seems promising just looking for other areas as well. I have hunted throughout Southern Indiana and Missouri.

Ragged Island WMA? I read the description and it sounds like a lot of waterfowl hunting?

I'm in VA Beach and would love to tag along with someone doing some squirrel hunting. I've never done it but I would love to and would love to get some more rounds through my 10/22.

I live in Craig County, near Salem and Blacksburg. A couple of years ago, I had an idea for a camping/squirrel hunting weekend meeting for members . We have National Forest campgrounds with plenty of squirrels. Idea was to meet in Sept, before bow season and cold weather. Camp, hunt, shoot and grill..

Sounds like a good time, the guys at Rimfire Central do something similar in Illinois every year.

I'm sure it would be, but there was no interest before and does not seem to be any now either. I'm fine if it's just two of us, but more is better smile

I also live in Craig county and the squirrel hunting here and in surrounding counties is great. There is a lot of public hunting available in Craig as well as the surrounding counties. As bustedknee mentioned it would make a great trip to camp for a couple days. I would recommend timing it with the fall trout stocking and get some trout fishing in at the same time. I know some who will spring gobbler hunt and trout fish after they finish their daily hunt.

I went out this morning.
Didn't see many squirrels and missed my only shot opportunity. I did get to see a coyote chasing a large doe, however! That was cool.
