So it appears that we will have new laws to follow starting July 1, 2020.
The one that will affect us here the most is the Universal Background Check. What does this mean? Unless I'm mistaken it means that every firearms sale or trade has to go through a background check, just like when you buy a gun from a FFL.

So, any deals here have to go through a FFL. They will charge a transfer fee, which varies by FFL. The seller and the buyer will have to go to a FFL who offers transfers and the background check will be done. I think the state police also charge a $2 fee.
As far as I know the state police are at all Virginia gun shows and offer background checks for only the $2 fee.

Now, my part .... I need to make it as easy as reasonably possible for you all to locate a FFL close by to you so that you can have the gun transferred and the background check done. And know what the FFL charges. I'll be working on that.

So.....lets open this to discussion!! rawk

And by the way. If you don't like these new laws, blame the Democrats who voted in November. And blame the Republicans who didn't vote!!

The site itself shouldn't be in danger. During my time in California, Calguns was and still is going strong. The for sale ads mention the preferred dealer to meet at for transfer.

ES Ramey Firearms in Dublin is $20 for transfer, plus the $2 for the state.

And yes, overall this sucks. And no, I didn't bring any California with me. I'm a one issue voter.

Classic American Gunsmithing in Charlottesville is $15.

That said, the new law caps the amount dealers can charge at $15 + the $2 fee.

Do the dealers have to take the firearm into their inventory before they can run the background check and transfer the firearm?

You can also use the FFL finder on Buds Gun shop and search by zip code to figure out where you want to meet: https://www.budsgunshop.com/ffl.php

The dealer must have the gun in hand to log the make and serial number before the transfer process can take place.

I figured that but do they have to take it into inventory from the seller, log it as an acquisition, record the serial # and all the info, THEN transfer it to the buyer, then recording it as a disposition?

Expect to pay near $25.00 and up for thew transfer. Fredericksburg has several FFL's. A transfer takes time and being as the FFL is not making any money/profit on the sale they need to make up the difference in fees for the transfer. The background check portion can keep a clerk busy for close to a half hour.

That is what I understood from Dominion Arms and that was the only way he knew to do a background check.

I saw the thread and I would be remiss to not do a shameless plug. I am a home-based FFL located in Burke. My standard fee is $22 for a transfer. I only charge $5 for each additional firearm transferred at the same time. I also offer $5 off for first responders, law enforcement and active duty or retired military.

Some answers. The new procedure will not require the FFL to take the firearm into their inventory. Voluntary checks are run now (including stolen status) and it is not required the FFL take the gun into their inventory. I am located in New Kent, and charge $20 to transfer one or two guns. Been that way for years. Additional guns (starting at #3) are $5 each. So for example, I will transfer 3 guns for you on a single transaction for $25. Each new transaction requires a new charge. So If you are transferring 3 guns to 3 different persons, it is $20 for each.
Also all first responders (LE, Fire, EMS, EMA), current Military or vet, it is $15 for one or two guns. Thank you for your service

Been in business at home since 2010 - check my feedback.

Thanks!!

Does anyone know of a reasonable priced transfer in Hampton roads? I've gone to superior pawn and guns before but it's a $50 transfer fee which is way over priced I think. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Why does an FFL have to be part of the deal? Can't police do a background check and that's it for a private sale? Since when does a constitutional right have fees attached to it? Time to sue them! Even in NY a private sale was fine as long as you had a permit and you added your handgun's serial number to your permit and deleted what you sold.
