A buddy of mine has an old 1919-1924 Davis & Sons Ajax, 12 gauge side by double barrel and didn't want to shoot it until he knew it was safe. I have run through it and it's in good functioning condition, but I have found warnings online against using full power loads in these. Early barrels could be demascus, steel, or wire so they recommend using light or target loads. Apparently after 1926 barrel specs changed due to ammo pressures increasing.
Wondering if there's a way to tell the barrel material, and would low recoil buckshot be classified as a light load?

Not recommending it, but I have seen fools on the tube shooting high pressure rounds, = to a 50 cal, out of modern shotguns, so it drives questions on how much is too much for older pieces.

RST Shells was a good source for low pressure shotgun ammo for older guns, but it looks like they're out of stock on 12 gauge right now.

I happen to have about a box of black powder shells for old shotguns.
