Very nice Jay. Also considering a DI pistol build but may go in carbine direction. Decisions decisions

Re: Glock 45 - 02/16/18 09:03 PM

Choose 11" cause I already have a Camp45. And did a silly thing and read on the interwebs 11" is ideal for 45ACP velocity. Longer than that bullet slows down. Not sure how much of that is true.

Next one will be 7 or 8"

I’m leaning towards 10In integrally suppressed with OAL of 16in so I only need one stamp. Thoughts....

Re: Glock 45 - 02/17/18 03:01 PM

You are going to love it in 45. Already have way less muzzle blast & concussion than any rifle round.

With a suppressor you & I will be best friends.

Can share some pics & details to make your build go smoother.

I compared a 9mm vs a 45 lower. The 9mm has enough meat to open up for 45.

Have you decided on a lower? If I had to do it over again I would not use QC10

Re: Glock 45 - 02/18/18 01:03 PM

Nice group for 50 yd. I will be using a New Frontier Armory lower and been on the prowl for a side charging upper and BCG. Starting drawing up the barrel and that piece that goes on the end. I’m in no rush as with any of my projects. Took me one year to finish that 45 Raptor and still haven’t worked up a load for it yet. Instead been working on a swage press (CSP-2 clone) for some bullet making. Figure I would try something different other then building guns.

8" direct impingement in the works.

Looking for a free float 7 - 8" rail that uses a GI barrel nut

Re: Glock 45 - 03/30/18 04:19 PM

11" seems taller than me

8" in work. Waiting for some parts to get in

Re: Glock 45 - 03/31/18 06:50 PM

So who makes a free float rail that uses a GI nut?

I’m sure I could get another style to work, but that would probably mean some quality time with the mill. Simple is good.

Re: Glock 45 - 03/31/18 09:19 PM

Samson EVO, QUAD

Troy several types

Fortis REV

Centurion C4

Midwest Industries gen2. The Midwest in the 11" upper seen above uses a barrel nut that is similar in many ways to GI barrel nut. Only difference is the location of the teeth.

Other rails may work with slight modifications. The location of the gas port limits the types of rails that can be used.

I do not own anything QC10, but I've been looking at their lowers for a while.
What happened that caused you to dislike them?

Re: Glock 45 - 04/03/18 07:46 PM

The mag angle is too steep ( needs to be have a sharper angle )

As it is the follower has to be modified by clipping off about 3/16" off the tip or the bolt or carrier catches on it.

This mod doesnt affect feeding in pistols.

Supposedly the Angsdadt arms lower uses a more sharper angle.

Stupid me traded off my New Frontier Armory 9mm lower. There is enough meat in the magwell section so a creative machinest ( Jay wink ) can open it up to take a 45 /10mmyuck mag. Or any mag platform Im guessing. I stared long and hard ad it too.

Re: Glock 45 - 04/05/18 10:07 AM

Oh wow. That's a shame that they couldn't catch that while designing facepalm
Thanks for the explanation!

I've always like the look of straight mags... Kind of like the old colt design, but with an appropriately sized magwell.

Apparently that lower is made by "MGI"

Wow! Good comparison! That blows my mind that the original angle was changed to that degree... No pun intended lol

Re: Glock 45 - 04/18/18 12:59 AM

Angstadt makes a fantastic .45 lower, runs 100% with my suppressed Macon DI upper. Easily one of my favorite guns, and softer recoil than my blowback AR-9. Tried a grease gun lower first and prefer the Glock lower, though a little less sexy looking than the straight mags.

Re: Glock 45 - 05/06/18 08:06 PM

Thanks for the pics Chris smile much appreciated. Gonna be looking at another lower here soon.

Cut another 1/16" of the buffer bumper & all mags locked back except a preban/leo marked mag I picked up at the show and added to the pile for testing. Another issue of weak magazine follower spring. Have some heavier Wolff springs so I can run Glock plus 2 bottom plates

Upper #2 runs great.

Upper #1 was tested by 4 members this weekend. Over 150 rounds of handloads & 3 various factory range ammo and it ran perfect. Each batch of brass formed a nice neat pile for easy cleanup

Re: Glock 45 - 05/14/18 06:43 AM

Interesting, I did these in 45 ACP and 460 Rowland couple years ago with qc10 lowers. The only problem I've ever had was in the Glock 21 handgun with 460 Rowland ammo and damage to the back end of the magazine while cycling.

Stronger Magazine springs solved that.

Never had to make any modifications while using the qc10 lowers. Maybe I have a different bolt or BCG than others.

460 Rowland AR gas system was about 2.5" longer than the 45 ACP version. Maybe 3" longer... I forget at the moment.

Bullet speeds absolutely increase with barrel length. I never got to 2000 FPS with the Roland, but got pretty close.

A Glock 21 with a 460 Rowland barrel can shoot either caliber. However an AR 45 barrel is good for 45 ACP only (obviously) and unfortunately a 460 Rowland AR barrel is only good for 460 Rowland. i.e. You can't use 45 ACP ammo in a 460 Rowland AR barrel. Ammo lock up on the boltface is different between a Glock and an AR.

Both cases headspace off of the mouth... in an AR this is important... in a Glock it does not seem to be... and shooting 45 ACP ammo in a 460 Rowland Glock 21 is very common practice. Which begs the question of shooting 40S/W in a 10mm Glock as a similar comparison... but that is another question for another day.

I would be very intrigued to see if somebody can make a bolt that would allow 45 ACP ammo to be shot in a 460 Rowland AR barrel. I've not been able to figure it out. My best guess is that without headspace to overpower the ejector the round never clips into the boltface firmly.

Re: Glock 45 - 11/24/18 06:36 PM

The secret on any Sub round is to use the heaviest bullet you can and the fastest powder (i.e. get the explosion over and done with ASAP) at an acceptable speed...

Your gas system may... or may not... be the right length for the above statement.

I am currently experimenting with 255 Gr LSWC (i.e. .45 Colt) bullets and Accurate #2... and possibly ZIP down the road... we shall see.

Zip powder and REALLY HEAVY .452s (i.e. 360+/- gr.) would be a theoretical goal. Who knows.
