Watch out for fake silver bullion bars, some going around the Richmond area - 05/15/16 07:11 PM

I received some in a trade, the passed the magnet test, the weight test, passed the acid test. I sold them to a good friend of mine and he noticed a difference in sound and took them and had them X-rayed and that revealed the truth. Of the 27 ounces I received, 16 of them are fake. The person I got them from is working with me to resolve the issue.

The sound test is another good field check.

Always carry a known good coin. Compare to an unknown by bouncing off a hard surface or against each other. ( Not recommended for uncirculated or collector pieces smile )

The parties involved settled the issue without any trouble. The shop the bars were purchased from bought them back without any questions asked, kind of suspicious to me that the owner didn't question the authenticity or have any interest in testing them himself

Ashland jewelry and coin exchange located at the intersection of ashcake road and route 1. The owner bought the silver back without hesitation, but he had no interest in testing it like he knew it was fake or something. The police have been notified and since it's the first they have heard about any issues with that shop nothing will be done unless more reports come in. The person I got the silver from was very responsive and worked with me in every way he could

You think maybe the owner of the shop was trying to keep a customer (you) happy? The owner of that shop is a stand up dude.

It was just suspicious to me. He did the right thing in my opinion but I would have acid tested the bars at least. The owner was very nice and was willing to pay the original price paid for the bars, not current prices.

acid test would affect the metal surface of the coin. Maybe sonic test but that requires expensive equipment small shops may not have.

Most shops have a electromagnetic tester, that's how these had to be tested
