Primer shortage and the ridiculous prices! - 07/27/20 08:57 PM

I know there is another primer shortage, small pistol in particular. However; I see them advertised for $100+ per 1k here and on Gun Broker. I hope no one is paying that much for them...? Is that bad for many?

Manufactuers are reserving the supply to make completed ammo. Its not pretty.

Definitely not pretty! $100 for 1k SP and $250 for SR here! Maybe I should start selling my surplus.

I got lucky a few years ago. A good friend called me and asked if I needed any SP primers. I told him if he had some extra ones I'd take them. 20 minutes later he showed up with 20K CCI OEM SP primers, gave them to me. I'm set for now.

Good luck on that guy asking $250 here.
I wish I had a HAZMAT license, I'd sell on GunBroker. They are actually getting bids for $400-500 for 5000 primers.

Shame fellow gun owners on here trying to rip off fellow gun owners and reloaders.

I could not agree more.

I'm still stuck on late 90's prices and think a case of primers should be $45 per 5000. No way I'm paying 100$ per 1000.

Actually find the whole thing FUNNY,HILARIOUS,A CAUSE FOR MUCH MIRTH!

I reloaded my first cartridges around 1974,and have been doing it since(I'm flippin CHEAP).Along the way,I've learned
some things:

IF YOU TRY AND GET OUT OF A FIREFIGHT,BETTER NOT BE CARRYING MORE THAN 150 ROUNDS FOR A LONG GUN AND 50 ROUNDS FOR A SIDEARM.(1979).

Handloads are excellent for accuracy. That being said,if you don't know how to SEAL a cartridge, don't trust 'em after 5 years. (1986)

Priming compound can be made by reading books and having at least a high school level chemistry class. The dicey part is filling the old primer.THINK WET! (1992)

In the end, you'd be surpised by how long primers last. The last match I shot in was using a .45-70,cartridges were loaded with FFG,and the primers came in a WOODEN TRAY.(2000)

Ya'll WANT TO THROW MONEY AT SOMETHING,GO AHEAD.

I've got those VAGT users on my "do not do business with ever" list...such as
gunsmith7,
toast, and
VTliskey.

I hope that others here do the same.

Same, I ignore them all but I wish this site set it up so you could give a reason as to why so one doesn't forget.

I'd love to see how you make lead stypnate/azide. Perhaps you can share your methods with the group?

A lot of people use strike anywhere matches. There are some good threads on other boards about doing this stuff. It's not for everyone, but it's also not completely out of the realm of possibility.

It maybe possible to make your own primers but it’s certainly not particle. During the last great primer shortage, a few claimed it can be done with with strike anywhere matches (these matches are not typically sold at stores from what I’ve seen) and also from toy caps though, not reliable. Below is someone making them from toy caps...he has some very steady hands!

This is the same as those that reload .22lr, it is hard and tideous but can be done with patience and determination.

Have to agree with you. FDR (the old commie lover) said there are no coincidences in politics. The Dems will do ANYTHING to take our freedom.

Re: Primer shortage costs - 09/30/20 04:10 PM

Older strike anywhere matches worked pretty well- newer ones not so much - they don't even "strike anywhere" very well.
Pulling the anvils and knocking the dents out is tedious !

I cast and even swage a few jacketed bullets and have more brass than I'll use(making sure my grandson has plenty too !)

Powder may eventually run short - have made BP but that won't work for everything !

Learned my lesson on primers the last time and stocked up 5K at a time . I don't sell 'em but have given a few thousand out to friends who will pay me back in kind some day - I hope !

Doubt primers ever go back to $30/thousand . But $100/thousand seems extreme - don't begrudge a profit but geez !
