44 Magnum question.

44 Magnum question. - 08/28/21 07:53 PM

I carry a 1911, but the one I love to shoot most is a sweet pre lock S&W 625. Accurate out the wazoo and not bad recoil with the Pachy's. I like it so much Ive been thinking about picking up a S&W 629 or Colt Anaconda...if the prices come down a bit. But Ive never fired a 44 Magnum and wonder if the recoil would be too much for my frail worn old A--. I know you can also shoot 44 special for target practice which Im told is about = to the 45ACP.

So the question: Is there anyone who would allow me to shoot their 44 Mag. Ill gladly pay for the ammo. Im in the Charlottesville area but would travel.

Thanks, you can leave me a note on PM.

I had a 629. Sold it, as it hurt!

For shooting - get a steel gun.

For carry-a-lot-shoot-a-little the 629 is ideal.

I have moved to 10mm. Hi-cap with manageable recoil and my loads are about 41 magnum in power.

Brother with all do respect, I suggest you stay away from 44mag. 44mag pounds on you more than 357mag.
The recoil will punish you and 44special doesn’t add anything the 45ACP can’t provide.

Let me know when you want to grab coffee again.

I've carried one doing work in remote parts of Alaska for years. I honestly can't think of a reason to carry it other than if you are going to encounter a brown bear, or perhaps an elk. Overkill for a feral hog, if you carry while hunting.

Training with it is painful and difficult. Using it in a life-threatening experience, you won't feel a thing.

I have a lot of respect for Marco and he obviously knows you...

However, I also understand the joy of shooting a big wheel gun.

I have and shoot a huge 460 S&W... the full performance loads are extremely strong +P++ stuff... BUT 45 Colt loads are mild as a kitten because of the weight of the gun et al.

The same can be said for the .454 Casull with .45 Cowboy loads
... and the 44 RM with 44 Special loads.

Happy to let you shoot anything I have... I do not have a 44.

Personally I prefer a .44 Special load with 200 gr Hornady Hollow points to about 800 to 850 FPS for self defense. The 629 is a bit light for really nasty .44 mag loads, Great gun but you have to wear your big boy pants with hot loads.

Hydrostatic shock in a handgun is difficult to achieve and control. One can do it but the definitive stopping ability in a handgun seems to be bullet diameter and shot placement. Look at the Phillipine Insurrection. .45 ACP with 230 hardball has a good reputation and it gois out at about 825-850 fps. Nothing is foolproof. There are cases of .22 rimfire doing the job and .44s not. Lots of variables. Personally, and this and all of the preceeding is my opinion and worth exactly what you are paying for it........nothing smaller than .4 in diameter, in whatever platform you like and are willing to practice with, everyone gets two at least- ammo is cheaper than funerals. Good luck and have fun.
