Corona virus prepping?? - 03/01/20 07:09 PM

I heard on NPR radio that Costco is getting hit hard by preppers buying up toilet paper and non perishable foods.

Any of you guys taking any precautions?

I've been stocking up on canned food. Should have a few weeks of food in any event.

Actually adding a few more cleaning supplies. Have a bunch of stuff on regular delivery from AMZN, going to double up on the essentials.

Never considered myself a prepper but started slowly in December and almost completed by now. Some stuff like sanitizer, soap, gloves, masks and of course ammo I always have around the house.

So my thinking, reading and talking on the issue got me buying:

At least 2 weeks supply of:

- canned meats, rice, pasta, other stable shelf food
- paper towels, tp, other hygiene stuff
- water
- basic meds

Realistically, the worst case scenario would be similar to China, where they implemented a quarantine, so people can still go out to get groceries but my understanding it’s one person from each household only.

The real thing to worry about is availability of certain goods. Because of interconnected supply chains and current interruptions throughout it (China makes a lot of stuff for the entire world), the real impact, if any, should be visible in April-May, when the manufacturers current supplies run out.

In any event, I think realistic prepping is a good thing. By realistic I mean, if you live in NOVA and with the abundance of military and strategic facilities in the area, do you really expect to survive a MIRV nuclear warhead? )))

Married to a microbiologist and we have been tracking this for a while. We’ve have taken basic precautions like additional hand cleaning supplies, disinfectants, and some basic items. Basically like preparing for a hurricane (minor supply chain disruptions).

It is important NOT to liken this to the flu. Based on the stats from China the death rate is about 4%, by comparison the flu’s death rate is around 0.5%. What is notable is that we have vaccines and antivirals for flu... we do not have them for corona virus. We should not panic, but nor is it reasonable to be flippant about taking reasonable precautions.

Concur that it is more serious than the flu, but looking at the distribution of deaths if you're under 70 and in good health, the mortality rate drops significantly.

Coronavirus Crackdown
Quote:
Level 3 would involve involuntary isolation of sick people and involuntary quarantines of people who have contacted those who are sick. Health officers could issue emergency detention orders or seek court orders for involuntary detention to involuntarily isolate or quarantine people who are uncooperative...

^This is what concerns me. Perfect storm to impede on our rights when most are panicking and willing to sacrifice freedoms for a feeling of security.

As for supplies, always had them and hopefully will not need them. Canned goods, meds, first aid including gloves, masks, antiseptics, sanitation, stored water if services is interrupted, extra fuel, etc.. If you are looking for hand sanitizer, masks, or rubbing alcohol, good luck. It appears they are all bought up and some are re-selling them online at hundreds/thousands percent mark up.

If you study history and what’s happened before , it’s always good to have a few essential supplies on hand and spares of them .

Always have spare Ammo for your bug out rifle and pistol
Good knife
Canned and dry food (I especially keep extra dry beans and rice)
Candles and stick matches
Good flashlight/s and extra batteries
Water
Fuel up your vehicles
Bio and chemical grade gas mask with newer 40mm filters
First aid and survival kit
Bug out bag with your essentials you can grab and go fast

NEWEST MUST HAVE SPARE ESSENTIAL : TOILET PAPER laugh
STAY PUT AND BE SMART AND USE YOUR SUPPLIES SPARINGLY

Work shut down for at least 2 weeks.
I'll spend that time preparing for what might be a rough road ahead.
I started today by building a fire with my oak firewood and cooked dinner over the hot coals.

I took all my deer loin out of the freezer to thaw. I'm going to eat it 3 times a day 'till its gone.

If I die from the virus, ain't no one else eating my deer loin!
