.45 Raptor

.45 Raptor - 06/27/17 07:44 AM

A buddy bought the chamber reamer, dies and Go/No-Go gauges.

We bought a few Green Mountain barrel blanks on a Group buy.

Plan to build S/A Remington 700s and AR-10 uppers rifles... and maybe an SBR.

What is .45 Raptor?

Basically a XXX Long .45ACP that can chase 3,000 FPS or 2 tons of energy. Virtually identical to .460 S&W except for the brass.

Read backstory here:

Built a case gauge and loaded a few "dummy rounds" to play with.

Heavy AR-10 barrel fabricated

Fire forming .30-06 brass with Cream Of Wheat (test charges for fire forming are 4.6 gr., 4.9 gr. 5.2 gr and 5.5 gr.)... we will see what works best. Wax from Babybel cheese seal the C.O.W. in the case (note red wax in the case mouth).

The fire forming rifle is a $375 Walmart Remington 700 ADL in .30-06 that was over-reamed to .45 Raptor. The shoulder of the .30-06 remains to hold the case securely for fire forming, but the .45 Raptor over reamed chamber will leave us with good .45 Raptor brass (after it is trimmed to length of course)... assuming all goes well.

Once the .30-06 barrel has fire-formed all the brass we need... it will be re-reamed as a .300 WM or a .300 Weatherby... or sold... or turned into a horseshoe stake. .30-06 ADL take off barrels sell for about $30-$40 on EBay all day long.

Reboring a barrel to a larger caliber (i.e. 9.3 x 62 Mauser etc.) is a specialty job I send out to JES Reboring in Oregon.

Reaming a chamber is a very straightforward job that is the $25 to $50 range depending on the Smith.

Future updates and pics to follow.

This is the fire formed brass (4.6 grains on left... to 5.5 grains on the right).

This is APPROXIMATELY what it will look like (lengthwise) after it has been trimmed. (FYI, the rim is fine, just looks torqued in the pic).

Ruger makes a "Precision" rifle.

This TEMPORARY barrel is more of a "circumcision" rifle and I am the Mohel performing the Brit Milah on the .30-06 brass.

And like any good Mohel... "I work for "tips"".

FYI... 5.7 grains of Clays is too hot. 5.5 or 5.6 is better. I have done 300 so far. 4.6 grain to 5.7... lots of experience here with C.O.W. These and many other calibers.
