This Pre-WW2 30s German Hitler Youth Knife HJ Dagger & Scabbard is in good condition but each piece shows signs of age, handling and storage. The blade is well marked and denotes early production by Ernst Pack & Sohne in Solingen. The "Blut und Ehre!" motto is just barely visible, with only the "Bl" being discernible. The blade exhibits many of the characteristics of a very early production HJ knife; the thin blade width, the low ricasso, the etched motto and the commercial maker's mark instead of the RZM stamp. The original factory edge has been lost and clear signs evidence of past use is present, however no signs of damage from abuse or neglect can be found. The original leather spacer has been lost. The black plastic grip scales are mostly clean however there is a mild amount of "wobble" that is detectable upon closer inspection. There is what appears to be a very fine crack running through top portion of the rear grip scale, it shows no signs of movement and may only be a scratch on the surface. The enamel diamond insignia has is strong and both the texture and colors are rich. The enamel insignia displays a detectable amount of "play" which is desirable as original examples are held in place by tabs instead of glue. Of note, the pommel appears to be an early production steel example, a magnet easily sticks to it. The scabbard is in very good condition and exhibits only expected wear from age and handling. The body appears to be made from steel, a magnet clings to it easily. Construction appears to be very consistent with original examples, however the strong black finish appears to indicate a possible Post-War repaint. Two internal "leaf" springs can be seen but the buffer pads appear to have been lost. The belt hanger strongly appears to be made from "Presstoff" imitation leather, showing a "layered" structure. The exterior has a textured surface that is black, while the interior of the belt loop clearly shows a white surface. The retention loop is made of real leather and has a snap button similar to those found on German M31 canteen covers. All hardware is clean and functions as you would expect. This German Hitler Youth Knife is an honest, early production example and would be a welcome addition to any advanced German edged weapons collection. $750 OBO
