THE ODYSSEY OF HOMER. “Popular Edition, 1930, Sm. Crown Quarto”, Published London by the Medici Society and Boston by Hale, Cushman & Flint. Rendered into English prose by S.H. Butcher & Andrew Lang; Illustrated after drawings by W. Russell Flint, A.R.A.

Book is in very good condition and bound in red leather with gold lettering and roman key design by Sangorski & Sutcliffe of London, England; all pages are gold gilt edged; marbled endpapers. 332 pages with 20 colour illustrations. No slipcase.

Book contains the following inscription on the first inside page indicating that it was given as a Christmas present by one prominent Washingtonian to another:

“To Hon. Edward F. Colladay from Joseph. C. McGarraghy, December 25, 1933”

Joseph Charles McGarraghy (November 6, 1897 – November 29, 1975) was a United States federal judge. He was in private practice in Washington, D.C., from 1925 to 1954 and President, Washington Board of Trade from 1946 to 1947. He was nominated by President Dwight D. Eisenhower on November 10, 1954, to a seat on the United States District Court for the District of Columbia. He was confirmed by the United States Senate on December 2, 1954, and received his commission on December 3, 1954. He assumed senior status on December 17, 1967. Edward Francis Colladay was an attorney active in Washington civic, political and educational activities for nearly sixty-five years. Colladay was born in Virginia, IL on February 15,1877. Colladay arrived in Washington, D.C. in September 1897 and enrolled in the old Columbian Law School, which is now George Washington University Law School. He received his LLB IN 1898 and his LLM the following year. On his twenty-first birthday, E.F. Colladay was admitted to the District Bar. In 1904, Colladay was admitted to the bar of the Supreme Court. In the same year, he joined the Washington Board of Trade, which he became president of in 1923, 1924, and 1937 was elected `man of the year' in 1958. Colladay served as a member of the board of trustees for the American University from 1921 until the time of his death. Colladay was a member of the Republican National Committee. In Colladay’s activities as an attorney, he served as general counsel to the First National Bank of Washington, special counsel to the D.C. Transit System, and counsel emeritus to the Board of Trade.
