Someone ask me how my Savage 17hmr shot, so I went out today and in 35 degree weather, shot 3 groups of 5 at 48 yards, here are the results.

The round was CCI TNT 17gr JHP. The scope is one of those Bushnell Banner 17hmr scopes, has the yardage dial on the top turret, made just for the 17hmr.

It did not shoot as good as I had remembered, maybe it was me, maybe some was the weather, but I guess it was Ok. I shot 3 groups, the 1st was not as good, and the 2nd was much better, and the 3rd (pictured) was decent. Maybe the gun was getting used to the temp outside, not sure, but the groups got much better the longer I was out there. I did not waste much time, shot the 3 groups pretty quick, all with in about 30 minutes. Hope this helps.

PJ, nice shooting. Does your rifle have Accutrigger?

My 9317 does not?! like the Hornady but loves the Federal and CCI 17gr. I've also had neck splits with Hornady. I've got a crapload of Hornady and I would gladly trade them off. Supposedly there is a Remington loading and I've got some Winchesters also I havent tried yet.

bolt, if you wanna try mine out just give me a shout.

Thanks Laser and Yes it does, and it is sweet. I will check the necks, I did not when I shot them yesterday, will let you know tomorrow. I just chucked them in the brass scap bucket (folgers coffee can...lol)

I have some of the Hornady black poly-tipped ones. I have not shot many of them, not sure why, just have not. I will have to try the Remington round, don't believe I have yet.

Since you have a model 93 also, I have a question for you Laser..... sometimes my next round in, likes to catch the lower part/face of the chamber and does not want to feed in. If I hold the mag up tight, no problems, if it is sitting on the sand bag like yesterday, no problems. I am very carful when chabering a round, do not want to push one of those tiny bullets back into the case and then fire it. I figure it is a loose latch or something in there that holds the mag up and in place, has not been an issue since I am aware and very careful with it. I should fix it though.

I too have a 93R17 without the Accutrigger and have had a couple of the feeding problems you describe, but, iirc, only when the mag was loaded with 5. Now I only load 4 and have not had a probelem. I am still a bit careful though.

Groudhog head shots at 100 yards.

I appreciate the offer Laser, will probably take you up on it sometime in the future. I am not thrilled with the accuracy of this 77/17 that I have, thought it would group a little better than what it does. Sounds like a good reason to get you down here to shoot with me after hunting season ends LJ smile

A Virginian....I have not tried 4 rounds in the 5 round mags, will try that next time out. I did get some chrome 10 round mags awhile back, and they do the same thing with 5 or 10 in them, probably something to do with the way the mag latches up. I will put that on my list of things to get done this winter.

Laser.........I checked the necks on my cases and I had 3 split necks out of the 15 rounds I shot the other day, never noticed that before, kinda weird. They split all the way down thru the shoulder.

Bolt......Do you think it is the general rim fire 17hmr round or the just the gun you have.

Puddle,

I honestly don't know if it is the rifle or the cartridge, some people talk about there 17hmr being a "tack driver" shooting cloverleaf groups at 100 yds. Maybe I am expecting too much from the gun with it being a rimfire. I have a couple more kinds of ammo to shoot through it to see if it is a turd. Will report back after I shoot it a little more.

400 yds for a 17hmr? I thought they were good up to maybe 200yds and still bring down rabbit.

I regularly use 22 lr over 300 went to 17 to stretch that just looking to save ammo by having a starting point.

I didn't realize it could reach out like that. I have been looking into getting either a 22mag or 17hmr bolt rifle for hunting around the Richmond area. Was planning on 22mag just due to the energy, but may have to think about that 17 a bit more now.

Thanks guys.

Hey MP3Mogul,

What ammo where you using...? I am looking to try some different kinds, for accuracy sake.
