This is a curiosity that I have. If you have a 10.5" SBR that you pin or weld a suppressor on, is it still an SBR? To me it would be like pinning/welding a flash hider on a 14.5" barrel and be legal. Does anyone know if there is a letter out there or anything? Obviously you need a stamp for the suppressor.

If the lower was registered as a pistol it has to remain a pistol. If you make the 10.5 barrel legal by welding a suppressor to it, what happens if you have problems later on with the suppressor? Incorrect. A pistol can be made into a rifle and returned to pistol configuration.

If the barrel is 16" or over and the overall length is greater than 26" than it is no longer an SBR. The length of a barrel is measured like this: close the bolt, insert a rod down the barrel, mark the rod at the greatest length of a permanent attachment, remove rod, measure rod. That is the procedure the ATF uses.
