For the average shooter 200 yards is “long range”. I shoot a .300WM out to 600m when I have the access but thats about it.

Until this year I shot pretty regularly out to 600 yards. I can shoot 500-600 with fairly good confidence.

I have shot out to 1000 on 3 different occasions. I can do it, but am not great at it. I have all the math down to get from 100 to 1000, but I am not that great at the wind calls

Especially when the wind blows different directions during the 1000 yards of travel.

Very active long range program at Butner, northstateshootingclub.com

PM me for more info if you want to. .308 WIN will get you there with 175's or 185's. 6.5 or 6 Creedmore etc. No magnum rifle calibers at Butner. 5.56 with 75's or 77's will get you to 600 very well (see below).

Shooters include mostly F Class and Palma. F class is shot prone from a bipod and rear bag. Palma shooters are sling and coat. You will see a lot of fancy equipment but it is not necessary.

NRA long range is 800-1000 yards. A "palma" match at Butner is 800, 900, and 1000 and is shot by both F Class rifles and Palma rifles, just on different targets.

Numerous nationally ranked / national LR champions live in VA / NC and shoot at Butner. You will get to see how well it can be done. New shooters always welcome. No brakes or suppressors.

I cannot strongly enough encourage your participation. If you want to learn how to read the wind, this is definitely tbe way to do it. Remember you are competing with yourself first. Don't be intimidated.

You need ammo 1MOA or better, a shooting mat, spotting scope, squeezie rear bag and a bipod, a good 100 yard zero and a reasonable approximation of your muzzle velocity. Math will then get you on paper at 1000, and after that the learning begins.

Math = jbmballistics.com

The midrange matches come in two flavors: 300, 500, 600. And 600 yard weekend.

Wind is a very noticable factor at 300 and up. If you want to try distance shooting and learn wind reading go shoot midrange first if you want.

I second the previously stated comments on Butner via North State Shooting Club. You can go to their web site and find the dates, course of fire, etc. I regularly shot there for nearly 10 years (medals, NRA records, International records and I am not the best wind caller around) and unfortunately had to stop due to work however plan on starting again in 2022. Dont be intimidated, everyone is willing to help you get to your “next levels”, be it load development, equipment, or technique. I shoot FTR and it can be an “arms race” of equipment as all things there is an evolution. That said, a factory bolt gun in .308 that shoots sub MOA and with ammo shoots 1/2 MOA is a very good thing and I am including the ammo in that sub MOA equation…the rest is up to you in technique and wind reading. The team matches are a great way to learn much as typically a very good wind coach is directing the shooter where and when to pull the trigger. You will make terrific friends and a good time all around. Reach out if you want to know more.

You can also check Quanticoshootingclub for their 1000 yard matches. Typically not an NRA match so less stringent on rules but a really good way to try your equipment and yourself…thats where I started when I lived in NOVA.

If you have a friend who belongs to Cavalier you can get out to 600yd.

Reach out if you want to chat via phone

Thanks for the tip on North State Shooting Club. I was hoping to find something closer and a place to practice, not just jump right into a full on competition.

I am in Louisa County

I lived in Alabama for many years. I was a 40 minute drive from The CMP and shot their 600 yard range regularly.

So far the only thing I have come up with near Louisa is black bear
https://blackbearsc.com/index.html

but the sign up fee is really high and they are only open on the weekends, and do not allow guests. The mix of all that is not appealing.

I have driven to Peacemaker in WV and had a good time there, but the open range days out to 1000 are limited.

I am also looking for 22 shoots of any type.

Peacemaker for those of us in NOVA or close.

1,000 yd only on Wednesdays - Patriot Range - must qualify
500 yd on Sundays - Starlight Range - must qualify
Independence Range Wed - Sun, out to 300 yd

Blackbear is out for me, too pricey and only open Sat and Sun, plus too far away.

sub moa if the wind is consistent
Worked Savage guns
Vortex glass
308 & 300wm

Hey all! I'm looking to get into long range. After almost 2 years of collecting parts on sale I've assembled and Aero M5 upper, lower, and free float rail, with a Ballistic Advantage heavy 18" barrel chambered in .308, Superlative adjustable gas block, Brownell's BCG, Geissele SSA-E, and Magpul back up sights. As far as glass goes I think I want something in FFP, 2-10x variable power range. The plan is to make this a do all rifle from local hunting to long range target shooting.

I’ve shot at The Cove (it’s been about 4 years since I was last there) and 340 but only on the pistol and 100 yard range shooting irons on ARs and zeroing a slug gun. Once I get glass on the .308 I’ll head out there to zero it. Looked at a few scopes this weekend and am 2nd guessing my initial thoughts on ffp with how small some of the reticles are on lower power. Going to look at a few more this week.

Any recommendations for someone living in Hampton Roads? It seems the kinds of distances you're talking about close to neck of the woods are virtually non-existent due to population density. Hell, I'm still having a hard time finding an outdoor range that's open year-round just to zero at 100-yds and ladder test handloads.

I have a nice mpa 6.5cm pro 2 rifle that I am wanting to stretch out. I took a long range course at frontline defense in nc but I didn't use this rifle. So if anyone want's to go lmk I have alot to learn but I am down.

Good Work!

I have a very similar gun lol same 18" BA Barrel

I put this scope on it

https://athlonoptics.com/product/argos-btr-gen2-6-24x50-apmr-ffp-ir-mil-copy/

With a Warne brand mount

I can own anything 600 yards or less with it. I have shot it out to 1000 a couple times now, but it takes me a few shots to get on a 1000 target with it.

Ken, thanks for the info. I haven't researched the the Athlon scopes, but I'll give them a look. How do you like yours, is there anything you don't like about it?

For the money, the Athlon scope is hard to beat. I have 2 of them now and have no complaints.

Keep in mind this is a $400ish scope, it is not going to look and feel like a $1000 scope as the glass isn't that high end. You will have a smaller eye box and some chromatic aberrations. the zero stop is spacer based and not mechanical but it works.

These things do not bother me as much as they do others. Can I consistently hit 500 yard targets with it? YES

Does it track correctly wen you turn the dials? YES

Give these guys a call and see if they are still giving discounts

I got a better deal than listed on the web page. They are also entertaining to talk to

more on the zero stop

Hi,

I just joined. I have several rifles setup to hunt out to 700 yards and wrote a short book on the topic.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/334195536914

I would like to find places and people to hunt with to make some hunting videos at these ranges.
