Chiming in with a really dumb question. What about shipping out of state to the manufacturer of the handgun for repair? I have to send my firearm back to Taurus in FL.

According to an ATF Q&A:

"(B9) May a nonlicensee ship firearms interstate for his or her use in hunting or other lawful activity?

Yes. A person may ship a firearm
to himself or herself in care of another
person in the State where he or she
intends to hunt or engage in any other
lawful activity. The package should
be addressed to the owner. Persons
other than the owner should not open
the package and take possession of
the firearm." page 177-178

This seems to indicate that an individual can ship a gun to himself in another state rather than transporting it. Such as shipping a pistol for competition. Does this have to be by FEDEX overnight? Or can it be slower?

It would have to be overnight, but you can't do it, as FedEx policy does not allow firearm shipments to a non-licensee.

By the way, my standard bill of sale form functions as the affidavit required by federal law to ship from a seller to a purchaser in an intrastate transaction via common carrier (not limited to fedex or ups - could be any courier service). All that's required is that the form be signed and dated by the purchaser and mailed to the seller prior to the seller shipping the gun.

- there are also postal service regulations about that, see USPS Pub. 52 re: nonmailable matter. Section 222 (page 13) actually prohibits markings on the outside of packaging indicating that there are firearms contained therein. Special rules about firearms, generally, are found at page 99, chapter 43:
