It is a gas-operated shotgun, meaning it cycles using the pressure from firing to reload, unlike the SPAS-12 which has a selectable semi-automatic/pump-action mode. The LAW 12 was designed to be lighter than the SPAS-12, weighing just over 7 lbs compared to the SPAS-12's 9.5 lbs.
Importation into the US was restricted in 1989 due to the Bush import ban, and it stopped around 2000.
