As the subject states, I'm a first time hunter. I've always wanted to do it but work and family took up my time for the last 21 years. Now that I have some time on my hands, I'm looking into taking up deer hunting. Any pointers that you all can provide would be greatly appreciated. I'm thinking about heading to the eastern shore area. Don't have a particular hunting rifle and contemplating on getting a savage in 270 since this is my first time and I'm unsure if it's going to stick.

Any advice on a rifle or caliber to use?

You can't go wrong with a .270, but I'm a .308 and 7mm mag guy myself. Just make sure you can use a rifle in the county you plan to hunt.

Stay with a main stream caliber like 30-30, 270, 308, 30-06, 243.

I only say that due to ammo being hard to find and expensive.

Watch bass pro they have sales all fall on rifles and scopes.

Va. deer are not that big so don't think that you need a bazooka to kill them.

I’ve used a .270 for deer hunting for numerous years and an excellent choice!

I'd recommend .270. Nothing wrong with a 30-30 but a .270 will reach on out aways. If you plan on shooting across a beanfield .270 is the way to go. Sight in about 1.5 to 2 inch high at 100 yards, and you should be point and shoot to about 300 yards.
