Summary of bills signed

SB749/HB217 ban certain semi-automatic firearms, including many semi-automatic rifles, pistols and shotguns, and prohibits the sale of magazines exceeding 15 rounds. This bill is an attempt to redefine and ban firearms that are in common use by law-abiding citizens. The legislation would prohibit the future sale, transfer, and manufacture of some of America’s most popular firearms.

SB173/HB229 prohibits the possession of any weapons in a hospital that provides mental health services or developmental services, and provides that any weapons seized in violation are forfeited to the Commonwealth.

HB1525 prohibits the purchase of certain firearms by legal adults under the age of 21. This bill now includes an emergency clause making it law upon her signing rather than on July 1st 2026.

SB727/HB1524 outlaw carrying and transporting many types of common firearms on public property. This includes any semiautomatic centerfire rifle or pistol with a fixed magazine capacity over 15 rounds

MAJOR BREAKING NEWS! A COMPLETE STATEWIDE TEMPORARY INJUNCTION ON THE "ASSAULT FIREARM" BAN AND CARRY PROHIBITION IS COMING ON JULY 21!

Washington County Circuit Court Judge Campbell is updating his temporary injunction, extending who is being enjoined from enforcing the “assault firearm” ban and carry prohibition to include all law enforcement in the Commonwealth!

To allow time for all law enforcement agencies to be properly notified of this injunction, he is delaying the start date until July 21.

After July 21, the new AWB law won’t be an impediment to the sales of “assault firearms” and magazines that hold more than 15 rounds, as the various lawsuits work their way through the legal system. That said, for firearm sales, it will be up to individual FFLs to decide if they will be selling “assault firearms” during the temporary injunction.[R1]

VCDL believes that the ban will be struck down permanently as unconstitutional once it is finally adjudicated, but life will go on normally as we wait that final determination.

A copy of judge’s letter opinion can be downloaded by clicking here.

IMPORTANT NOTE: there is still an unresolved issue that could affect all of this – Jay Jones has filed an emergency appeal to the Virginia Supreme Court, asking the Court to put a stay on the GOA/VCDL injunction. We don’t know when that appeal will be decided.
